Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has reported the capture of a smuggler who attempted to transport 12 gold biscuits concealed within his rectum along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal.
The gold biscuits weighed 1.406 kg and are valued at over Rs 1.24 crore, according to the BSF.
Troops from the 143 Bn BSF, stationed at the Bithari Border Outpost, acted on a reliable intelligence tip-off regarding an attempt to smuggle gold from Bangladesh into India, prompting them to inspect individuals near the IBB. At around 5.45 pm on Wednesday, they detained a man and used a handheld metal detector on him. A distinct sound was emitted, although no metal was found on his clothing or external body. The BSF personnel then took him to the Bithari BOP for questioning. Initially, he pretended not to know anything, but after prolonged interrogation, he eventually confessed to hiding gold biscuits within his anal cavity,” stated N K Pandey, DIG and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier, BSF.
The individual was swiftly transported to the nearest government hospital located at Sarapul, where an X-ray confirmed the presence of a foreign object within his rectum. Doctors intervened and successfully extracted a condom containing the 12 gold biscuits, he noted.
The total worth of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 1,24,63,424. The apprehended smuggler has been handed over to the appropriate authorities alongside the confiscated gold for further legal action. This marks the third significant seizure of gold by the vigilant troops of the South Bengal Frontier in less than a week, with a total value exceeding Rs 5 crore since February 14. The BSF is unwavering in its commitment to thwart smuggling and other illicit activities along the border. With its robust intelligence network, alert personnel, and advanced equipment, the BSF is always ready to counter any tactics employed by smugglers,” the DIG emphasized.
He encouraged residents near the border to assist in maintaining peace along the IBB by providing any information related to gold smuggling to the BSF's Seema Sathi helpline at 14419, or via WhatsApp or voice message at 9903472227. Those who offer valuable information will be rewarded, and their identities will remain confidential, he assured.
