Kolkata, Nov 27 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully confiscated gold valued at approximately Rs 1.02 crore near the India-Bangladesh border in Malda district, West Bengal, as reported by officials on Thursday.
This precious metal was concealed within the tyre of a bicycle.
According to a senior official from the BSF's South Bengal Frontier, the 119 Battalion of BSF stationed at the M.S. Pur Border Outpost in Malda acted upon specific intelligence regarding an attempt to smuggle gold from Bangladesh into India. Consequently, they ramped up surveillance along the border and meticulously checked all movements.
At around 2:56 p.m., a suspicious individual was observed approaching the border with a bicycle. Upon being halted, the troops began inspecting the bicycle. During the examination, they noticed that the front tyre seemed unusually swollen and rigid, which raised their suspicions. Upon removing it, they discovered seven gold biscuits hidden inside.
Seizing the moment of confusion, the smuggler managed to escape.
While the BSF personnel were preoccupied with the bicycle, the smuggler fled towards a densely populated area.
Any immediate action by the BSF could have resulted in collateral damage.
The confiscated gold was taken to the border outpost for weighing.
The total weight of the gold biscuits was recorded at 816.41 grams, with an estimated value of Rs 1,02,40,230.
Following the incident, a search operation was launched in the vicinity, but the smuggler remains at large.
The gold has been handed over to the relevant agency for further legal processing.
The official commended the successful operation, asserting that BSF personnel are fully capable, alert, and committed to preventing illegal activities such as smuggling along the border.
He encouraged local residents to report any information regarding gold smuggling through the BSF Seema Sathi helpline number '14419' or via WhatsApp message or voice message on 9903472227.
Assurances were made that credible informants would be rewarded, and their identities would be kept strictly confidential.
