Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 18 (NationPress) In a significant advancement for the welfare of farmers, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned a funding of Rs 1,718.56 crore to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) for the cotton season 2023–24.
This funding is intended to offer direct price assurance to cotton farmers nationwide.
For the 2023–24 cotton season, the area cultivated is projected to be 114.47 lakh hectares, with an estimated production of 325.22 lakh bales, which constitutes nearly 25 percent of the world’s cotton production.
The government determines the minimum support price (MSP) for seed cotton (kapas) based on the guidance from the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).
The CCEA stated that MSP operations are essential to protect the interests of cotton farmers, especially during times when market prices dip below the MSP.
“These measures are vital for stabilizing cotton prices, averting distress sales, and guaranteeing profitable returns for farmers. By fostering inclusivity in agricultural markets, MSP operations significantly enhance the economic security of cotton-growing communities,” an official statement noted.
The statement further highlighted that cotton is among India’s most crucial cash crops, supporting the livelihoods of around 60 lakh farmers and sustaining 400–500 lakh people involved in related sectors, including processing, trade, and textiles.
The CCI has been designated as the primary central agency responsible for conducting MSP operations in the cotton sector.
It acquires all Fair Average Quality (FAQ) cotton from farmers without any quantitative restrictions when market prices fall below the MSP, thus providing a reliable safety net for farmers. To ensure effective support, CCI has created an extensive procurement network across all 11 major cotton-producing states, with more than 508 procurement centers active in 152 districts, ensuring that farmers have easy access to procurement.
Additionally, the Corporation has launched various technology-driven initiatives focused on enhancing the efficiency and transparency of MSP operations.
