New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has recently given its nod to the minimum support price (MSP) for copra for the 2026 season.
The MSP for fair average quality milling copra is set at Rs 12,027 per quintal, while for ball copra it will be Rs 12,500 per quintal this season.
An official statement highlighted that the MSP for this season marks an increase of Rs 445 per quintal for milling copra and Rs 400 per quintal for ball copra compared to the previous season.
A higher MSP aims to guarantee better returns for coconut farmers and motivate them to increase copra production to satisfy the rising demand for coconut products both in India and abroad, as per the Cabinet.
The government has raised the MSP for milling copra and ball copra from Rs 5,250 per quintal and Rs 5,500 per quintal respectively in the marketing season of 2014, to Rs 12,027 and Rs 12,500 for the 2026 marketing season, reflecting a growth of 129% and 127% respectively.
To ensure fair pricing for farmers, the government announced in the Union Budget of 2018-19 that the MSP for all mandated crops will be set at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production.
According to the statement, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd. (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF) will continue to serve as Central Nodal Agencies (CNAs) for copra procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
Meanwhile, Tiptur copra, renowned for its high quality, has gained significant market recognition and is experiencing robust demand both domestically and internationally. The farmers from the region are now pursuing Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for Tiptur copra, emphasizing its superior quality and high demand across Asia’s largest coconut markets.
