New Delhi, February 24 (NationPress) - The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reported that its flying enforcement squads identified 131 air pollution violations within a two-week period concluding on February 18, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.

This information was presented during the 126th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force (ETF) of the CAQM on February 20, aimed at assessing the inspection and enforcement measures taken across the National Capital Region (NCR) during the reporting phase from February 4 to 18.

Throughout this timeframe, a total of 318 inspections were conducted, which comprised four inspections in the Construction and Demolition sector, 306 inspections in the Industrial sector, and eight inspections concerning violations related to Diesel Generator sets.

Among the 131 violations recorded, there were four from the Construction and Demolition sector, 123 from the Industrial sector, and four concerning Diesel Generator sets, as reported up until the morning of February 20, 2026.

Proposals have been made to close 39 units, seal 10 Diesel Generator sets, issue Show Cause Notices (SCNs) to 15 units, and 28 reports are currently under review.

During the meeting, special attention was focused on the inspection of road dust mitigation strategies, which include mechanized road sweeping, water sprinkling, maintenance of paved shoulders, and adherence to the stipulated dust suppression measures.

Detailed reviews of the inspection outcomes were conducted, and relevant agencies were urged to maintain on-the-ground vigilance and strict compliance with dust control measures, particularly in high-traffic areas and urban hotspots.

As of Monday, the cumulative enforcement statistics indicate that 26,328 units, projects, and entities have been inspected by the CAQM's flying squads.

Based on these inspections, 1,686 closure directives for non-compliance have been issued to date. Out of these, 1,290 resumption orders have been granted following verification of compliance by the respective units.

Additionally, 123 cases have been forwarded to the appropriate State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs)/Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) for final resolution, while the status of the remaining 273 entities regarding resumption orders is still under review as per established procedures.

Point of View

The alarming rate of air pollution violations uncovered by the CAQM underscores the urgent need for stringent enforcement of air quality regulations. With the health of millions at stake, it's imperative that authorities take decisive action to protect public health and ensure compliance among industries.
