The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to produce former judge Giribala Singh before a court on Friday, 30 May 2025, a day after her arrest in connection with the alleged dowry death of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma, who was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on 12 May 2025. The arrest followed the Madhya Pradesh High Court's decision to quash Singh's anticipatory bail in the high-profile case.

Medical Examination at MANIT Campus

On Thursday, the CBI transported Giribala Singh to the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) campus in Bhopal for a mandatory medical examination. According to reports, a special medical camp was set up at the MANIT premises, with formal approval granted by the Madhya Pradesh Police. An ambulance was also seen arriving at the campus during the procedure.

Seven-Hour Questioning Before Arrest

Before being taken for the medical examination, the CBI questioned Singh for nearly seven hours at her residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. A CBI team, accompanied by a heavy police contingent, had reached her home at approximately 10:30 am on Thursday. CBI officials also visited the residence of Principal District Judge (Bhopal) Manoj Kumar Srivastava to formally notify him of the arrest, with officials carrying arrest-related documents during the visit.

What the High Court Observed

In a 17-page order passed on Wednesday, the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled the interim bail that a Bhopal district court had granted to Giribala Singh on 15 May — just three days after Twisha's death. The High Court noted that WhatsApp chats and statements by Twisha's family indicated the allegations extended beyond her husband alone. The court also referred to allegations that Twisha was pressured to terminate her pregnancy, observing that the termination itself was an admitted fact in the case.

Background: Twisha Sharma's Death

Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home on 12 May 2025, barely five months after her marriage to Samarth Singh on 9 December 2024. Her death was recorded as an alleged suicide, though her family has alleged dowry harassment. Samarth Singh was arrested from Jabalpur on 22 May and was remanded to CBI custody on Wednesday. This case marks one of the most prominent dowry death investigations involving a sitting judicial officer in recent years.

What Happens Next

With Giribala Singh now in CBI custody and her son Samarth Singh already remanded, the agency is expected to seek further custody to conduct joint interrogation.
