New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah successfully completed his self-enumeration for the inaugural phase of the Census 2027, heralding the launch of India's first entirely digital census.

In a message on his X account, HM Shah remarked: “Today marks the start of the ‘House-listing’ phase, the initial step in the Census process. I filled out the self-enumeration form at my home in Delhi. This initiative will be crucial in propelling India’s growth trajectory and ensuring that all citizens reap the full advantages of government programs.”

He urged citizens to cooperate fully as Census teams prepare to visit homes nationwide, emphasizing the importance of providing accurate information. HM Shah also advocated for self-enumeration via the official portal.

This initiative signifies the commencement of Phase I - House Listing and Housing Census (HLO) for Census 2027, which will take place from April to September 2026 in a staggered approach across various states.

An innovative 15-day self-enumeration window will precede door-to-door visits in each locality, allowing households to submit their details online.

The self-enumeration portal (https://se.census.gov.in) is available in 16 languages and permits households to complete a 33-question schedule addressing housing conditions, amenities, assets, and fundamental household information. After submission, citizens will receive a reference ID to share with enumerators for verification.

The previous census in India was conducted in 2011, while the 2021 census was deferred due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Census 2027 will be the nation’s 16th national census and the first to be entirely digital, eliminating paper forms. It will employ mobile applications for enumerators, complete with offline capabilities and enhanced data security measures.

Phase II, focused on population enumeration and including caste data, is set for early 2027, with March 1, 2027, designated as the reference date.

The House Listing phase is vital for gathering essential data necessary for planning infrastructure, welfare initiatives, urban development, and resource distribution.

By facilitating self-enumeration, the government aims to boost accuracy, minimize errors, enhance participation, and create a more user-friendly process.
