Kochi, Sep 12 (NationPress) Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, on Friday guaranteed that the Central government will provide complete assistance to Kerala for the envisioned Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), contingent upon the submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by the state.
During his address at the Kerala Urban Conclave in Kochi, Minister Khattar mentioned that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had already highlighted the project to him.
"The achievements of Kochi Metro and the Water Metro showcase Kerala's ability to implement world-class urban transportation solutions. The ongoing enhancement of the Kochi Metro also signifies the collaborative spirit between the state and the Centre," the Minister remarked.
He observed that a similar partnership is evident in the execution of Smart City projects in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
Khattar emphasized that urban transformation in Kerala is progressing steadily, bolstered by robust support from the Union government.
Looking ahead, he stated that Kerala has the potential to develop into the world’s longest “linear city”, extending nearly 700 km from Kasaragod in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south.
"In just a few years, Kerala will approach approximately 95 percent urbanization, positioning it as the most urbanized state in India," he noted.
The Union Minister encouraged the state to aim for global standards in urban infrastructure and livability.
"Cities like Dubai, Singapore, London, and Washington have established high benchmarks in modern urban living. Kerala, too, must strive to lead in India for urban development and quality of life," he stated.
His assurances arrive as the Kerala government is actively pursuing approval and financing for the RRTS, envisioned as a transformative solution to connect major towns and cities statewide through high-speed, energy-efficient rail services.
Officials at the conclave indicated that the DPR for the project is nearing completion and is expected to be submitted shortly.
If sanctioned, the RRTS will signify another landmark in Kerala's journey toward sustainable, inclusive, and modern urban growth.
