Is Kerala's CM Vijayan Stubborn About the RRTS Project?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, criticized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday regarding the State government's unwavering support for the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project. He accused the administration of making announcements without conducting adequate studies as they approach the conclusion of their decade-long governance.
Satheesan claimed that the Chief Minister is exhibiting excessive obstinacy and engaging in publicity-driven project declarations. He recalled the controversy stirred by the CPI(M) during the Oommen Chandy administration when it was asserted that E. Sreedharan would be ousted from the Kochi Metro project.
“These are the same individuals who protested, claiming that Sreedharan was being marginalized. Now, they collectively ridicule and oppose him,” Satheesan remarked.
He clarified that he does not oppose the establishment of a high-speed rail corridor, asserting that the Congress would back any truly beneficial initiative, regardless of its origin.
“The infrastructure in Kerala needs to advance. A high-speed rail line is essential. However, it must be appropriate for Kerala and grounded in thorough studies,” he stated.
Satheesan accused the Vijayan administration of announcing initiatives without sufficient evaluation, describing the RRTS proposal as an electoral ploy designed solely for publicity. He contended that the project, as presented, is impractical statewide and may only be viable in select areas.
Referencing expert opinions, Satheesan mentioned that E. Sreedharan himself has indicated that a high-speed railway is more fitting for Kerala compared to a rapid rail system. He highlighted that high-speed rail operates at speeds exceeding 200 km/h, whereas the proposed RRTS would function at notably reduced speeds.
Reiterating the Congress-led UDF's commitment to development, Satheesan emphasized that progress should not be limited to mere announcements lacking planning or accountability. He remarked that the citizens of Kerala are observing closely and will evaluate whether the government's actions represent genuine development or merely pre-election theatrics.
