Kolkata, July 16 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Wednesday, hailed the Union government’s initiative to partner with the Bangladesh government for the restoration of the ancestral home of the iconic Indian filmmaker and author, Satyajit Ray, located in Mymensingh City. This comes after the Bangladesh government reportedly demolished the historic site, causing significant unrest in Indian political and cultural spheres.
“I extend my sincere gratitude and respect to the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi JI for this noble initiative. The Government of India's proposal to join hands with Bangladesh for the repair and restoration of Satyajit Ray's ancestral property in Mymensingh, with the aim of turning it into a Museum of Literature and a representation of the shared cultural heritage between India and Bangladesh, is indeed a remarkable endeavor,” he stated in a post on his official X handle.
Adhikari emphasized that this move by the Union government would honor the rich legacy of Indian culture and reflect the Prime Minister’s thoughtful policy and dedication to preserving Indian history.
He noted that this ancestral house in Mymensingh City belonged to Ray's grandfather, the esteemed figure in children's literature, Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury.
Moreover, he mentioned that the Minister of External Affairs had already expressed regret over the demolition of the property, which is currently under the ownership of the Bangladesh Government.
On Tuesday evening, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee released a statement urging the Union government to take action regarding the demolition of Ray’s ancestral residence in Mymensingh City.
Simultaneously, she called upon the Bangladesh government and all aware citizens of that nation to take measures to preserve this heritage-filled residence.
Following her statement, the Union government promptly announced its proposal to collaborate with the Bangladesh government for the restoration and reconstruction of Ray's ancestral property.
