Is the Centre Treating Tamil Nadu Unfairly?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 7 (NationPress) DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson has accused the Centre of presenting selective statistics and administering a step-motherly treatment towards Tamil Nadu in budgetary allocations.
In a post shared on the social media platform X, Wilson expressed his concerns regarding the repeated assertions made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw that Tamil Nadu has experienced a 7.5-fold increase in railway funding under the current government compared to the UPA era.
While he acknowledged the rise in absolute figures, the MP contended that the growth seems modest when placed in the context of the substantial expansion of the overall national Railway Budget.
Wilson indicated that the total railway outlay has grown nearly 25 times from 2009–14 to 2025–26.
In contrast, Tamil Nadu's allocation has increased from Rs 879 crore to Rs 6,626 crore during the same timeframe.
By only presenting the 7.5-fold increase without comparison to national trends, he argued, creates a misleading impression of generosity towards the State.
To highlight what he termed an imbalance, Wilson referenced figures from several other States.
Gujarat's allocation surged from Rs 589 crore to Rs 17,155 crore, showcasing a 29-fold increase.
Delhi recorded a 27-fold jump, while Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh experienced 24-fold and 23-fold rises, respectively.
Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh documented 20-fold and 18-fold growth.
States such as Rajasthan, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and Bihar also achieved higher growth multiples than Tamil Nadu.
"These figures clearly indicate that Tamil Nadu has not received allocations commensurate with the national increase in railway spending," Wilson remarked, advocating for fair treatment and expedited execution of pending projects.
In reference to a reply from the Ministry of Railways to his parliamentary inquiries, Wilson pointed out that although the Centre had granted in-principle approval to transfer the city's Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to the State government, the memorandum of understanding remains in preparation.
This delay has left the long-anticipated integration of Chennai's MRTS with the Chennai Metro Rail network at a standstill.
The MP also requested clarity on stalled railway projects, their current allocations, and the reasons behind the sluggish progress.
He questioned whether new tendering would commence for the Athipattu–Gummidipoondi additional line, emphasizing that prolonged delays reflect a lack of urgency in meeting Tamil Nadu's infrastructure requirements.
