Why is CM Stalin Urging PM Modi to Fast-Track Railway Projects?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a request for immediate action to expedite long-awaited railway initiatives in the state. He emphasized the "delays" in fund distribution and land acquisition issues that are hindering crucial infrastructure growth.
In his comprehensive communication, the Chief Minister highlighted that Tamil Nadu has successfully completed much of the preparatory work necessary for railway expansion. However, progress is being hampered due to the "delayed and fragmented release" of financial resources from the Ministry of Railways.
He urged the national government to disburse the necessary funds in their entirety and as a priority to facilitate quicker project implementation and ensure timely compensation for landowners.
CM Stalin noted that administrative approval has been granted to acquire 2,500 hectares of land for various railway projects under the Union government.
Out of this, land acquisition is nearly complete for about 94 percent of the area needed for 19 major projects, and this land has been duly transferred to the Railways.
Nonetheless, over 931 hectares remain unfunded, resulting in significant delays in various undertakings.
He pointed out that the lag in compensating landowners has disrupted progress and created uncertainty for many affected families.
CM Stalin referenced the Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari broad-gauge doubling project as a prime example, where funds totaling Rs 289.78 crore for land compensation are still outstanding, thus delaying the project’s completion.
Additionally, the Chief Minister advocated for the revival of projects that have been stalled, including the Thoothukudi–Madurai (via Aruppukottai) line and the Tindivanam–Tiruvannamalai line.
He also called on the Centre to approve new railway initiatives in line with Tamil Nadu’s growing economic significance.
Describing Tamil Nadu as India’s second-largest economy and a vital manufacturing and export center, CM Stalin asserted that enhanced rail connectivity would greatly benefit national growth.
He assured that the State government has implemented a strong monitoring system and is fully committed to facilitating swift execution.
Expressing faith in the concept of cooperative federalism, CM Stalin stated that timely support from the Centre would serve the interests of both Tamil Nadu and the nation as a whole.
