Alappuzha, May 3 (NationPress) The president of Kerala BJP, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, expressed his discontent on Saturday towards P.A. Mohamed Riyas, the state Tourism Minister, over a social media comment Riyas made about Chandrasekhar’s attendance on the stage during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event at Vizhinjam Port the previous day.
Riyas, who is the son-in-law of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, shared a photo on social media depicting Chandrasekhar seated alone on the stage while he was part of the audience. This post was widely circulated by supporters of CPI(M) online.
Responding at a BJP gathering in Alappuzha, Chandrasekhar remarked, without directly naming Riyas, that: “While the entire country celebrated the Vizhinjam Port project, a Communist Royal Family’s son-in-law seems to be distressed.”
“I arrived at the venue early, around 8:45 a.m., and took my designated seat. Others were still in the visitors’ lounge. I came early to be with my karyakartas. When they shouted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai,’ I joined in,” he explained.
Hitting back at Riyas, Chandrasekhar added, “I’m not sure why this Communist Royal son-in-law is disturbed. I’m neither a psychiatrist nor a counselor to provide advice -- he should seek a doctor’s help.”
His comments were met with enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
Later, in a post on X, Chandrasekhar criticized both Riyas and Rahul Gandhi indirectly. He stated, “Two 'royal dynasties' boast about democracy and the Constitution… one in Delhi and another right here in Kerala. In Delhi, it’s the son; in Kerala, it’s the son-in-law. Corruption is a shared trait for both. Corruption is rampant there, and it’s the same here!”
Tensions between the two parties have been escalating since April 26, when images from a review meeting at Vizhinjam Port led by CM Vijayan showed his entire family present, including daughter Veena Vijayan, her son, and his wife.
This image triggered backlash, especially after former DGP Jacob Thomas questioned online, “Who is this young authority?” in reference to Veena’s son from her previous marriage.
Riyas and Veena wed in 2020, both for the second time. Riyas’s rapid ascent in the CPI(M) since then, which includes his promotion to minister despite being a first-time legislator, has often been scrutinized, especially by BJP members.
