Guwahati, March 24 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressed on Tuesday that the acknowledgment of the Charaideo Moidams as a UNESCO World Heritage Site signifies international recognition of Assam's vibrant cultural heritage and the 600-year-old legacy of the Ahom kingdom.
In a statement on X, the Chief Minister referred to this achievement as a “well-deserved tribute” to the historical and cultural importance of the Moidams, which serve as burial sites for Ahom royalty.
“International acknowledgment for the 600-year-old legacy of Charaideo Moidams! Thanks to the efforts of the Double Engine Government led by Adarniya Narendra Modi ji, Charaideo Moidams have attained UNESCO World Heritage Site status, representing a significant tribute to the illustrious history of our Ahom kingdom,” CM Sarma stated.
Known as the “Pyramids of Assam”, the Charaideo Moidams are situated in the Charaideo district and are regarded as one of the most significant archaeological and cultural sites in the region. They trace back to the Ahom dynasty, which governed Assam for approximately six centuries.
The UNESCO recognition is anticipated to enhance the global visibility of the site, promote tourism, and aid in preservation efforts.
Officials are optimistic that the World Heritage status will also entice international researchers and scholars to examine the unique burial customs and architectural styles of the Ahom period.
CM Sarma acknowledged the collaborative efforts of both the central and state governments in achieving this prestigious designation, underscoring the advantages of the “double engine government” -- a term employed by the BJP to symbolize the synergy between the state and central governance.
This development has been met with widespread approval across Assam, with historians and cultural advocates deeming it a pivotal moment for the conservation of the state’s heritage.
The Charaideo Moidams mark the first cultural property from Assam to receive the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription, highlighting a monumental achievement in presenting the region’s historical legacy to the global audience.
