Kolkata, Sep 26 (NationPress) Former West Bengal Education Minister and Trinamool Congress Secretary General Partha Chatterjee was granted conditional bail on Friday by the Calcutta High Court's single-judge bench presided over by Justice Suvra Ghosh. This ruling pertains to a case initiated by the CBI concerning discrepancies in the recruitment of primary teachers.
This legal development marks a significant moment, as it clears the path for Chatterjee to emerge from judicial custody after enduring more than three years behind bars.
Even though he had previously received bail in other cases linked to the multi-crore cash-for-school-job scandal investigated by both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), his release from judicial custody hinged on this specific decision from the Calcutta High Court.
The hearing concluded at Justice Ghosh's bench on September 15, but the order was withheld until Friday, when it was finally announced that he would receive conditional bail, allowing him a step closer to freedom.
However, Chatterjee will not be able to celebrate the upcoming Durga Puja festivities from the comfort of his home, as legal experts estimate that it may take another month or slightly more for him to be fully released from judicial custody.
This is due to a previous observation made by the Supreme Court on August 18, stating that the lower court (a special CBI court) must first complete the charge-framing process and witness statements in all cases against him before his release can be finalized.
With the charge-framing already completed and the witness statements underway, legal experts believe the finalization will occur within a month or so, allowing Chatterjee to be fully released.
On Friday, the Calcutta High Court imposed several restrictions on Chatterjee's bail. He is prohibited from leaving the designated area without court approval, occupying any government position, or interacting with witnesses related to the cases.
He must also surrender his passport, refrain from changing his mobile number, and can only enter his Assembly constituency if necessary for his role as an MLA.
Among all defendants in the school-job cases, Chatterjee has spent the longest time in custody, having been arrested on July 23, 2022, at his home by ED officials. He was subsequently arrested by the CBI as well.
