Chennai, March 7 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to implement an ambitious plan to construct approximately 200 temporary container-based shelters throughout the city, aiming to offer free housing for migrant workers and homeless families. This initiative is a significant step towards meeting the increasing demand for safe and accessible housing for vulnerable populations.

Civic officials have stated that the project will introduce provisional housing facilities in various locations across Chennai, focusing on zones with a high density of migrant laborers and those lacking stable accommodation.

The GCC will begin by conducting a comprehensive survey of the migrant demographic in different city areas to pinpoint suitable locations for the shelters.

Each shelter will be crafted from modified shipping containers and will include basic amenities necessary for maintaining minimum living standards.

The facilities are expected to provide sleeping quarters, restrooms, electrical connections, and drinking water access. Authorities emphasized that the goal is to ensure dignified temporary housing for those currently residing in unsafe environments like pavements, underpasses, and makeshift dwellings.

The shelters will primarily cater to migrant workers who come to Chennai seeking job opportunities in fields like construction, sanitation, logistics, and various informal sectors.

Additionally, families without permanent housing will also be permitted to utilize these facilities.

A senior official from the GCC remarked that this initiative is aimed at creating a more organized and compassionate solution for the city’s expanding migrant workforce.

“Numerous workers and families are living in precarious situations due to the lack of affordable housing. These shelters are designed to offer safer and more structured living conditions. The project will be executed following an assessment of the needs of different communities and locations,” the official stated.

The design and configuration of the container shelters will be finalized based on the outcomes of these assessments to ensure suitability for the number of occupants and local circumstances.

Currently, the Greater Chennai Corporation manages 49 shelters for the homeless across the city, including 37 regular shelters and 12 special facilities linked to government hospitals.

In addition to increasing the number of shelters, the civic body intends to enhance existing facilities and improve the living standards for current residents. Officials mentioned that the new shelters are expected to provide three meals daily to occupants, ensuring basic food security alongside accommodation.

This initiative forms part of the GCC’s broader strategy to enhance urban welfare infrastructure and provide humane living conditions for some of the city’s most vulnerable individuals.
