Why Are Workers in Chhattisgarh Excited About the New Wage Limit?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raipur, Jan 6 (NationPress) The replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) with the Viksit Bharat Grameen Rozgar Ajeevika Mission (Grameen) - VB G RAM G - has ignited significant debate, as the Opposition and the ruling party focus more on the renaming of the legislation rather than thoroughly discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the new law.
However, setting aside the political conflicts, the workers hailing from economically disadvantaged families who were previously employed under MNREGA are expressing their joy and satisfaction with the fresh features brought forth by the VB - G RAM G law.
In the Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, numerous farmers and laborers shared their initial impressions of the new legislation, eagerly welcoming the extension of the wage limit from 100 days to 125 days. They feel not disheartened but rather enthusiastic about the new provisions, hoping to remain in their villages for extended periods.
They assert that this initiative by the Central government will greatly enhance their livelihoods, as they will now receive 125 days of employment opportunities within their villages.
A local worker named Vinita expressed her thoughts to IANS, stating, "The central government's new law is excellent. Previously, we received 100 days of work; now it has risen to 125 days, which will boost our income. We are grateful to the central government for this improvement."
Dalu Sahu shared that he and his family are thrilled with the new law, as it has raised their earnings and provided them with guaranteed work.
Nand Yadav, the president of the workers' union, remarked that the 'VB G RAM G' legislation serves the best interests of the laborers.
He conveyed, "The new law is significantly better than its predecessor. It guarantees 125 days of employment as opposed to the previous 100 days for workers. Under this scheme, wages will be disbursed weekly or within a maximum of 15 days, credited directly to their accounts online. This initiative will enhance workers' income and fortify their families," he stated with joy.
Importantly, the new VB G RAM G law ensures 125 days of wages for unskilled laborers from impoverished households, provides unemployment benefits if work is not secured within the designated timeframe, and entitles workers to interest if there is a payment delay exceeding 15 days.
