Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday paid floral tribute to former Defence Minister George Fernandes on his birth anniversary, recalling the Padma Vibhushan-honoured socialist leader's lifelong work for workers and the marginalised. 'I offer my deepest respects to former Defence Minister of the country, George Fernandes ji, honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, on his birth anniversary,' Chouhan wrote in Hindi. He added that 'गरीब, वंचित और श्रमिक वर्ग के उत्थान के लिए आपके द्वारा किए गए कार्य सदैव प्रेरणा देते रहेंगे' (the work you did for the upliftment of the poor, the deprived and the working class will always remain a source of inspiration).

George Fernandes, born on 3 June 1930 in Mangaluru, rose from trade union organising in Mumbai to become one of post-Independence India's most recognisable socialist politicians. He led the historic 1974 All India Railway Strike, was jailed during the Emergency for his role in the underground resistance, and later served multiple terms in Parliament.
