New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) The CISF Vande Mataram Coastal Cyclothon–2026, a premier national public engagement and awareness initiative, was launched from the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the capital on Wednesday.
The event was officially inaugurated by Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, who served as the Chief Guest, marking the beginning of a 25-day long national movement.
Two CISF cycling teams departed simultaneously from Bakkhali (West Bengal) and Lakhpat (Gujarat), aiming to cover around 6,500 kilometres along India's eastern and western coastlines, including nine coastal States and two Union Territories, ultimately concluding at Kochi on February 22, 2026.
The flag-off event saw the presence of numerous prominent dignitaries who showed their support for the cyclists. This gathering emphasized strong collaboration between ministries and agencies, highlighting the national significance of this initiative and delivering a unified message of vigilance, unity, and shared national commitment.
Speaking at the event, the MoS Home remarked, “This initiative is being organized to celebrate 150 years of 'Vande Mataram', the legendary song that inspired India's freedom struggle and continues to motivate generations in the spirit of national service.”
He underscored that enhancing coastal security necessitates active public involvement, particularly from coastal communities. He expressed pride in the designation of CISF as the Recognized Security Organization (RSO) under the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, positioning the Force at the heart of India's maritime and port security framework.
The ceremony featured a choral rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ and a performance by the CISF Band, with uplifting music echoing throughout the venue, filling the atmosphere with pride and patriotism.
On this momentous occasion, the Director General of CISF noted, “The Cyclothon is organized to commemorate 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, the emblematic song representing national unity, sacrifice, and collective determination.
“In this historic context, the initiative aims to translate the essence of Vande Mataram into practical action by involving citizens in protecting the nation’s vital maritime boundaries,” he added.
Women Empowerment and Inclusivity
The Cyclothon places a strong emphasis on youth engagement and women's empowerment.
Significantly, 50% of the participating cyclists are women, marking an important stride towards gender inclusivity and women's empowerment in national service initiatives. Through fitness-oriented public interaction, the Cyclothon aspires to encourage citizens to embrace discipline, physical fitness, and a spirit of service to the nation.
