Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday, 8 May 2026, declared that Kailash Utsav-2026 symbolises a unique confluence of Indian culture, spirituality, and modern thinking, while underscoring the growing global prominence of the Adi Kailash region. Speaking at the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of multiple development projects held at L.S.M. Government Post Graduate College in Pithoragarh, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government's commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure and promoting heritage-based tourism.

Kailash Utsav and Its Significance

Addressing the gathering, CM Dhami described the festival — held in the name of Lord Shiva — as a harmonious meeting point of tradition, spirituality, and contemporary development. "This event associated with Lord Shiva's name represents a wonderful confluence of our culture, spirituality and modern thinking," he said. The Utsav, he noted, is not merely a cultural celebration but a platform that showcases the transformative development potential of the Kumaon Himalayan belt.

Modi's 2023 Visit and Adi Kailash's Rise

Dhami recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the region in 2023, during which Modi travelled to Adi Kailash, Gunji village, Jageshwar Dham, and Pithoragarh, and offered prayers at Parvati Kund. The Chief Minister credited that high-profile visit with catalysing a surge in global interest. "After that visit, Adi Kailash has emerged not only as a major destination for Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand or India, but also as an important place for people across the world," Dhami said. The steady rise in visitor numbers to Adi Kailash over recent years, he added, reflects the immense tourism and development potential yet to be fully realised in the region.

Youth, Culture, and Social Change

The Chief Minister also expressed satisfaction at what he described as a growing reconnection among young people with Indian culture and traditions. He noted that youth between the ages of 15 and 25 are increasingly moving away from substance abuse and social evils and embracing heritage. "It is heartening to see that today's youth are not only focussed on material progress but are also reconnecting with their cultural roots," he said. This cultural resurgence, in his view, is as important as any infrastructure milestone.

Development Projects and Community Welcome

The ceremony also marked the inauguration and foundation laying of several development projects in the Pithoragarh district, aimed at bolstering connectivity and tourism infrastructure in the border region. Dhami acknowledged the warm reception extended by local residents, noting that community members — from young people to elders — turned out in large numbers to welcome the delegation. "Our sisters and daughters welcomed us with flowers, our youth boosted our enthusiasm with energetic slogans, and our elders blessed us wholeheartedly," he said. The event signals continued state focus on unlocking the economic and spiritual tourism potential of the Kumaon Himalayas in the years ahead.
