Artificial intelligence will transform roughly 70 per cent of jobs within the next 1,000 days — not eliminate them, but reshape them beyond recognition. That was the sharp warning Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis delivered on Sunday, 2 August 2026, as he inaugurated an AI Centre of Competency at Ramdeobaba University, Nagpur, built in collaboration with global chip giant NVIDIA.

The new centre is not a lecture hall with a new nameplate. Established through a formal collaboration between Ramdeobaba University and NVIDIA, it is designed to train students in applied AI, provide research infrastructure, and plug directly into industry skill requirements. CM Fadnavis made clear the ambition: educational institutions must stop producing graduates and start producing contributors — people equipped with 'meaningful, quality human capital,' as he put it, not merely degree-holders.

The inauguration was attended by Padma Shri Satyanarayan Nuwal, university Chancellor Dr. Shankar Mantha, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajesh Pandey, and other dignitaries. Ramdeobaba, a private institution that has carved a distinct identity by staying clear of commercialisation, was recently elevated to university status — a milestone Fadnavis highlighted as proof that private institutions can anchor national research ambitions.

Fadnavis on AI, quantum computing, and the multidisciplinary imperative

CM Fadnavis named artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing as the three forces that will define this century. Quantum computing, he said, has already given research processes unprecedented speed. No field — engineering, biotechnology, robotics — can afford to operate in silos any longer. 'A multidisciplinary approach is now a necessity of the times,' he said, urging universities to rewire their pedagogy before the world outpaces them.

He pointed to Maharashtra's 'Mahavistar' initiative as a live example: AI is already being used to give farmers smart guidance, cut input costs, and raise productivity. Healthcare is seeing parallel disruption. The message was consistent — AI is not a future concern, it is a present obligation.

Universities as the original innovation engine

Fadnavis closed with a historical argument that landed with force: the world's greatest innovations did not emerge from boardrooms. They came from universities and research institutions. Every technology titan the world looks up to today began a journey inside a campus or a lab. That places Ramdeobaba University — and institutions like it — at the centre of India's next innovation cycle, not its periphery.

Maharashtra's push to embed NVIDIA's AI infrastructure inside a Nagpur university fits a broader state strategy of partnering with global technology firms to build domestic AI capability — a strategy that complements India's national push for digital skilling and a homegrown semiconductor ecosystem. If the Ramdeobaba model proves replicable, expect similar centres to follow at other Maharashtra universities.

The degrees can wait. The skills cannot.
