Background: Over a Decade of BRICS Statistical Cooperation

BRICS statistical collaboration has been a structured endeavour since 2010, when member countries began publishing the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) — a harmonised data compendium. The Snapshot BRICS JSP, a more accessible companion volume, was introduced in 2020. What began as basic data-sharing has since evolved into deeper alignment on data standards and methodological innovation, serving policymakers, researchers, and the general public across member economies. Two major statistical events are convened every year, supported by technical side meetings of NSO representatives.

Key Developments Leading to This Meet

A technical meeting of NSOs was held on 16–17 April 2026, focused on finalising chapters for the BRICS JSP and Snapshot 2026. That session established a mutually agreed framework for the publications and set timelines for each country's contributions. The Lucknow heads-level meeting builds on that groundwork, with the agenda centred on dissemination of statistics, innovation in national statistical systems, and exchange of best practices among member nations. Notably, Saudi Arabia is listed among the invited nations, reflecting the expanded BRICS membership that now encompasses key Gulf and African economies.

Alongside the main heads-level meeting, two half-day side events are being organised with participation from NSOs, policymakers, academia, think tanks, civil society organisations, and technical experts. Priority Areas of the BRICS Statistics Track

The BRICS Statistics Track has identified four priority areas for 2026: strengthening core BRICS statistical products; driving innovation and reform in national statistical systems; improving data dissemination and accessibility; and strengthening macroeconomic and sectoral statistics. These priorities reflect the bloc's collective push to move beyond headline data toward granular, real-time indicators that can support responsive policymaking across diverse economies — from India's rapidly digitising economy to the resource-driven structures of the Gulf members.
