New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) In a pointed remark, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday cautioned Leader of Opposition Atishi to be vigilant around her party associate and former CM Arvind Kejriwal, who is accused of orchestrating an attack on AAP MP Swati Maliwal in his residence.
During a discussion on the Comptroller and Auditor General of India report regarding the Public Health Infrastructure & Management of Health Services, CM Gupta expressed her concerns for Atishi's safety after the latter passionately defended Kejriwal's health policies in the Assembly.
“As one of only four women legislators in the House, I worry for your safety. You are ardently defending Kejriwal, and it seems you are closely collaborating with him… He is a person who has been accused of having Swati Maliwal beaten up,” she remarked.
CM Gupta warned that someone capable of harming a female Rajya Sabha MP from his own party could also pose a threat to Atishi, advising her to exercise caution while associating with Kejriwal.
She further extended her sympathy for Atishi, who faced criticism in the Assembly due to Kejriwal's alleged wrongdoings.
“Where is Kejriwal? He has placed you in this precarious position,” CM Gupta added.
These comments came in the wake of protests from AAP legislators, spearheaded by Atishi, in response to harsh critiques from BJP members regarding the CAG report, which highlighted serious management failures in Delhi's hospitals and Mohalla Clinics.
The alleged incident involving Maliwal at the CM’s residence became a significant issue in the Assembly elections, with the BJP labeling Kejriwal as “anti-women.”
Maliwal filed an FIR following the May 13, 2024 incident, claiming she suffered significant distress and trauma after an alleged assault by Kejriwal's aide, Bibhav Kumar, who reportedly forced her out of the CM’s residence in north Delhi.
In her FIR, Maliwal described being verbally abused before facing physical aggression.
“He slapped me multiple times while I cried for help. I was in shock and continued to scream for assistance. To defend myself, I attempted to push him away,” Maliwal recounted.
She further detailed the assault: “At one point, he aggressively assaulted me, yanked my shirt up, causing the buttons to pop off, and my shirt was lifted.”
“I fell and struck my head on the center table, continuing to call for help as he did not relent and proceeded to kick me in my chest, stomach, and pelvic areas,” she added.
Following the incident, Atishi asserted that Maliwal was merely a “pawn” of the BJP, sent to Kejriwal's residence with ulterior political motives.
