Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha attended both the opening ceremony of the South Tripura Nasha Mukt Premier League 4.0 and the closing ceremony of the Mud Football Tournament 2.0 at South Matai, Hrishyamukh RD Block, South Tripura — signalling that the state's anti-drug push is now firmly embedded in the sporting calendar.

Sport as the state's anti-drug weapon

Speaking at the event, Dr. Saha framed the twin tournaments not as mere recreation but as deliberate social engineering. 'Sports play a vital role in shaping a healthy, disciplined and drug-free society,' he said, adding that such initiatives were designed to steer youth toward 'fitness, teamwork and positive values' and to strengthen the collective resolve toward a Nasha Mukt Tripura. The language tracks closely with the national Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched in 2020 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to curb substance abuse through community-level awareness and engagement programmes. Tripura has steadily localised that mandate — running multiple editions of Nasha Mukt sports events at the district level, with the Premier League now in its fourth edition and the Mud Football Tournament in its second.

Why South Matai, and why mud football?

The choice of venue is deliberate. Hrishyamukh RD Block sits in South Tripura, a district that shares a long border with Bangladesh and has historically faced challenges around youth vulnerability and substance access. Holding high-visibility sporting events at the block level — rather than only in the capital Agartala — signals an intent to carry the message to the grassroots, not just the headline. Mud football, a contact sport played on waterlogged ground, carries its own symbolism: it is raw, inclusive, and demands nothing more than physical presence and team spirit.
