Eastern Uttar Pradesh's long-overlooked Ghazipur district is getting a double dose of ambition: a new medical college named after the ancient sage Maharshi Vishwamitra, and a sweeping road network that now connects it to Kashi, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur — with more to come. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's office shared the announcements on Thursday, 30 July 2026, framing them as proof that Purvanchal is no longer the state's forgotten east.

Speaking through his office's official post, CM Yogi Adityanath declared: 'Gazipur mein Maharshi Vishwamitra ke naam par Medical College ban chuka hai' ('A medical college in the name of Maharshi Vishwamitra has been built in Ghazipur'). He added that the district is now being stitched into the state's arterial road grid through four-lane connectivity in all directions.

Purvanchal Expressway's Next Leap — to Shaktinagar

The headline infrastructure move is an announced extension of the Purvanchal Expressway — already one of Uttar Pradesh's flagship highway projects, inaugurated in phases from 2021 — further east through Chandauli and Varanasi all the way to Shaktinagar. The extension, if executed, would dramatically deepen the expressway's reach into the coal-belt and industrial corridor of eastern UP, pulling Ghazipur closer to both state capitals and key commercial nodes.

The existing Varanasi-Gorakhpur Highway and the Purvanchal Expressway are already described by the CM's office as the 'powerful foundation' underpinning Ghazipur's improved access. Travel between Ghazipur and the trio of Kashi, Lucknow, and Gorakhpur — journeys that once ate half a day — has been significantly eased.

A Medical College Named for an Ancient Sage

Alongside the roads, the Maharshi Vishwamitra Medical College in Ghazipur represents the UP government's parallel push to expand district-level health infrastructure across Purvanchal. The Yogi administration has pursued new medical colleges in multiple eastern UP districts since 2017, aiming to reduce the gap between the region's large rural population and tertiary healthcare access. Naming the institution after Maharshi Vishwamitra — the revered Vedic sage — carries the cultural branding the government has consistently layered onto its infrastructure projects in the region.

The timelines for the college's first admissions cycle and the formal government order for the Shaktinagar expressway extension are yet to be confirmed officially.

Ghazipur's transformation from a connectivity blind spot to a four-lane hub is the clearest signal yet that Purvanchal is being repositioned — not just as a political constituency, but as an economic corridor the state intends to build around.
