In his post, CM Yogi described Singhal as the praneta — the driving force — behind the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Andolan and a man who made the resolve to construct a grand Ram temple the very jeevan-sadhana, the life's mission, of his existence. 'His ascetic life, dedicated to Ram, the nation, and Sanatan culture, will remain an indelible inspiration for cultural self-respect and national service,' CM Yogi wrote.

Ashok Singhal and the movement that reshaped Ayodhya

Ashok Singhal, who passed away in November 2015, was arguably the most prominent face of the Ram Janmabhoomi campaign through its most turbulent decades. As international president of the VHP — the Hindu nationalist organisation founded in 1964 — he channelled mass mobilisation around the Ayodhya cause from the 1980s onward, making the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site a central demand of the Hindu nationalist movement.

The movement he anchored eventually found legal resolution in the landmark Supreme Court verdict of 2019, which allocated the contested site in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh for the construction of the Ram temple. The Shri Ram Mandir was consecrated in January 2024 — an event Singhal had devoted decades to making possible, though he did not live to witness it.
