Fifty million homes draped in the tricolour — that is the ambition Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set for Uttar Pradesh ahead of Independence Day 2026. On 31 July 2026, the Chief Minister's Office of Uttar Pradesh announced that CM Yogi chaired a review meeting in Lucknow covering preparations for the Har Ghar Tiranga (Every Home a Tricolour) campaign, Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day), and the 15 August Independence Day celebrations.

A target of 5 crore flags across UP

CM Yogi called on the people of Uttar Pradesh to participate enthusiastically in the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, setting a formal target of 5 crore households hoisting the national flag this year. The scale is deliberate: Uttar Pradesh, with a population exceeding 240 million, is the country's most populous state, and a 5-crore household target would make it the single largest contributor to the national campaign.

Government buildings, schools, and village panchayats in the frame

Beyond private homes, the Chief Minister directed that the tricolour be hoisted with full dignity at all government and semi-government institutions, aided institutions, local bodies, educational institutions, gram panchayats, fair-price shops, and industrial and commercial establishments. The directive sweeps across every tier of the state's administrative and civic infrastructure — from district collectorates down to ration shops in rural blocks.

Partition Remembrance woven into the Independence Day arc

The review also covered Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, observed nationally on 14 August each year to honour the victims of the 1947 Partition. The central government instituted the observance in 2021. By integrating it into the same preparatory review as the flag campaign and Independence Day, the UP government is framing the two days — 14 and 15 August — as a single, continuous arc of national remembrance and celebration.

Har Ghar Tiranga's four-year run

The Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan was first launched in 2022 as the centrepiece of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, marking 75 years of Indian independence. What began as a one-time commemorative push has since become an annual fixture, with state governments across the country running coordinated drives to boost household flag-hoisting numbers. Uttar Pradesh's 5-crore target for 2026 reflects how the campaign has scaled its ambitions year on year.
