A 19-year-old engineering student, Amudhan, was fatally assaulted near Malumichampatti in Coimbatore on 10 August 2025, with police arresting six individuals — including a 17-year-old minor — in connection with his death. Hindustan College of Engineering, where Amudhan was enrolled as a third-year student, has maintained that the attack did not take place on its premises.

What Happened

According to the Coimbatore district police, Amudhan and his friend Sriman were intercepted near Malumichampatti by a group that took them to a ground behind the college. Both were assaulted at the location. Amudhan subsequently returned to his room, where he developed breathing difficulties, and was rushed to a hospital. He died despite receiving treatment.

A murder case was registered by Chettipalayam police based on a complaint filed by Sriman.

How the Case Unfolded

The incident came to light during an investigation into a separate case at a house in Poonga Nagar, Othakkalmandapam. A group had allegedly entered the residence, assaulted a college student named Ilavarasan and others, and stolen a mobile phone. During that inquiry, police reportedly established a link to Amudhan, which allegedly led the accused to target him.

This is a significant detail — Amudhan's death was not a standalone altercation but appears connected to a chain of prior incidents involving multiple individuals across different districts of Tamil Nadu.

What the College Said

College Principal Jaya stated that the administration learnt of Amudhan's hospitalisation on the evening of 10 August. College representatives visited the hospital and were later informed of his death. She acknowledged that some of the arrested individuals were students of the institution but reiterated that the assault occurred off-campus.

The principal also disclosed that Amudhan had been suspended in July following an internal inquiry that found he had assaulted members of the canteen staff. His parents had been summoned, and he was sent home with them. He and his parents were asked to return to the college on 11 August for further proceedings — a date he did not live to meet.

The Accused

Police have identified the six arrested individuals as: Arumugam, 20, of Cuddalore; Aravind, 21, of Sivaganga; Siva Rohit, 20, of Tiruvarur; Mani Balu, 20, of Perambalur; Santhosh, 20, of Madurai; and a 17-year-old from Tiruvallur district, whose identity has been withheld in accordance with the law. The accused are from at least six different districts across Tamil Nadu, pointing to a network of connections rather than a localised dispute.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are continuing their inquiry to establish the precise sequence of events and determine the individual role of each accused. The case has drawn attention to campus-adjacent violence and the vulnerability of students in disputes that originate outside institutional boundaries. Authorities have not yet indicated whether additional arrests are expected.
