A three-year-old girl died at Stanley Medical College in Chennai on Monday, 15 June, after she was allegedly sexually assaulted in Pudupettai village near the SIPCOT industrial estate in Gummidipoondi, Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. Police have arrested a 19-year-old migrant worker from Bihar, identified as Bipin Manjhi, in connection with the crime.

How the Incident Unfolded

The child, daughter of migrant workers from Bihar, was reported missing on Sunday evening. Her disappearance triggered a frantic search by family members and local residents. Hours later, she was found in a bushy area near the village with severe injuries and heavy bleeding.

She was first rushed to the government hospital in Gummidipoondi and subsequently transferred to Stanley Medical College, Chennai, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Accused and the Arrest

Following the discovery, a large number of migrant workers and local residents assembled and apprehended the suspect, Bipin Manjhi, who was reportedly staying close to the victim's family. According to police, Manjhi was employed at the same steel factory as the girl's parents.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Manjhi acted alone in the alleged assault. Police have ruled out the involvement of others, as had been claimed by some local residents. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the accused was produced before a court for remand.

The incident occurred in an industrial belt that houses nearly 300 private factories and employs a large number of migrant workers, predominantly from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. Political Reaction

The case drew sharp political responses. K. Annamalai, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Tamil Nadu unit who recently quit the party to form the 'We the Leader' movement, called upon the state government to take immediate and stringent action against what he described as rising crimes in the state.

Kanimozhi, deputy general secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Member of Parliament, also condemned the incident and demanded that the government act decisively against the increasing incidence of crimes against children and women.
