Chennai, Feb 19 (NationPress) Three individuals have been detained on accusations of sexually assaulting a woman at a remote site while threatening her husband with a knife in Tamil Nadu.

The incident took place on Tuesday night when the couple from Odisha arrived in Tiruppur, the textile hub of South India, in search of employment.

As per police reports, the couple was at the railway station when the three men - Mohammed Nadim (24), Mohammed Denis (25), and Mohammed Mursith (19) - approached them, offering to assist in job hunting.

Under the guise of providing help, the suspects deceived the couple into a secluded area, where they reportedly held the husband at knifepoint and sexually assaulted the woman.

After the incident, the victim reported the crime to the Tiruppur North Police Station. The police responded promptly, filed a case, and apprehended the three suspects.

Tiruppur's knitwear sector employs around 800,000 individuals, with approximately 300,000 coming from northern Indian states.

This incident has reignited discussions regarding the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties, such as the AIADMK and BJP, have criticized the ruling DMK government for not ensuring women's safety.

Numerous sexual assault cases have emerged in the state recently. On December 24, 2024, a second-year engineering student from Anna University was raped by a 37-year-old vendor.

In another alarming case, a 13-year-old girl from a government school in Bargur, Krishnagiri district, accused three of her teachers of rape.

TN BJP Chief Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) condemned the DMK government, arguing that crimes such as murder, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping, and sexual offences have surged.

EPS stated, “The law and order situation in Tamil Nadu has deteriorated due to these incidents,” further claiming that sexual crimes against women and children have escalated under the DMK administration.

He noted that parents of school-going children are particularly alarmed by the increasing instances of sexual assault.
