Chennai, July 28 (NationPress) In a significant move to address the increasing issue of large-scale domestic waste, the Coimbatore city corporation is set to initiate a special bulk waste collection campaign on August 2 and 3.
This initiative is designed to gather and appropriately dispose of old furniture and other sizable household items that are frequently discarded illegally along roadsides and into waterways.
The civic authorities have requested residents to bring bulk waste like old beds, sofas, mattresses, tables, chairs, and other large household items to specific collection points established at each ward and zonal office.
Zonal helplines have been activated to offer assistance, and sanitary supervisors will be present for guidance.
The announcement of this drive came shortly after media reports underscored the escalating issue of bulk waste being dumped in public areas, often during the early hours or late at night to avoid detection.
In a press statement, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran stressed the significance of community involvement in this initiative.
“We urge residents to bring their bulky household waste to their respective ward collection centers. Please refrain from leaving items on roadsides, footpaths, or open grounds,” he stated.
The Commissioner further noted that several recyclers have already expressed interest in participating.
“Initially, we will gather all collected waste at a central location. Recyclers will be invited to take any reusable items, while the remainder will be disposed of through scientifically approved methods,” he elaborated.
Depending on public response, the civic body is contemplating making the bulk waste collection a weekly occurrence.
Plans are also in progress to incorporate electronic waste (e-waste) in future drives.
“Revenue generated from the sale of recyclable materials will be allocated to the welfare of our sanitary workers,” Prabakaran added.
The corporation aspires that this initiative will not only diminish illegal dumping but also encourage responsible waste disposal and recycling habits among residents.
