Chennai, Oct 15 (NationPress) The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation is embarking on a project to construct an advanced sports complex exclusively for para-athletes. This proposed facility will be built on a 2.42-acre site located along Jeeva Nagar Road in Ward 45 with an investment of Rs 15 crore. Its primary goal is to offer specialized infrastructure for para-athletes to engage in training and competitions across various sports disciplines.

Civic officials have indicated that the municipal body submitted a comprehensive proposal and design blueprint to the state government two months prior. This proposal, which features architectural and accessibility enhancements, was assessed by state authorities and returned with suggestions for adjustments.

Currently, the design plan is undergoing revisions based on the government’s feedback and will be resubmitted for official approval soon. Notable modifications include enhancements to ramp designs and additional accessibility features to ensure total compliance with national standards for facilities catering to individuals with disabilities.

Upon approval, this initiative will signify a significant leap in Coimbatore's journey towards establishing an inclusive sports ecosystem. The envisioned complex is set to facilitate both competitive events and routine practice sessions. It will encompass indoor training spaces for various sports, with particular accommodations for disciplines such as shooting, table tennis, and athletics.

The blueprint also includes accessible amenities like wheelchair-friendly pathways, specialized toilets, and other mobility-support elements.

Officials have stated that the site at Jeeva Nagar Road was selected due to its accessibility and closeness to major city routes, ensuring ease of access for athletes traveling from different areas of the district.

The facility is anticipated to incorporate basic lodging for visiting athletes engaged in tournaments and training camps. Local sports organizations have applauded this initiative, labeling it a timely advancement toward fostering the involvement of differently-abled athletes in competitive sports.

Once completed, the project is expected to serve as a benchmark for similar infrastructures in other cities throughout Tamil Nadu.
