Coimbatore, Jan 29 (NationPress) Coimbatore is on the verge of a significant advancement in the realm of inclusive sports, as the Tamil Nadu government has issued Administrative Sanction for the city’s inaugural dedicated Paralympic Sports Complex.

This groundbreaking facility will be established by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation at Kavundampalayam in West Zone Ward 33, representing a long-awaited achievement for athletes with disabilities in the area. The development is projected to cost approximately Rs 9.90 crore and will cover an area of around 1.10 acres.

Constructed with a focus on accessibility, this complex aims to furnish para-athletes with state-of-the-art training and competition facilities—a necessity that has been missing in the city despite its history of producing skilled athletes.

As per city officials, construction is anticipated to start soon. Upon completion, the complex will accommodate various indoor sports such as table tennis, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and badminton.

Outdoor amenities will support para-athletic events like javelin throw, discus throw, shot put, and club throw, allowing competitors to train and compete under standardized conditions. Additionally, the complex will feature extensive support facilities.

Future plans include a cutting-edge gym designed specifically for para-athletes, a rehabilitation and yoga center, medical care units, and separate, accessible changing rooms and restrooms for both men and women.

Seating for spectators and a cafeteria are also part of the blueprint, ensuring the complex serves as a holistic sporting environment. All facilities are set to comply with international accessibility standards, according to officials.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the Tamil Nadu government's broader vision for sports development, which focuses on enhancing sports infrastructure while discovering and fostering talent from grassroots, rural, and marginalized communities.

By establishing a specialized venue for para-sports, the state aims to provide equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities to achieve their best. In recent years, Coimbatore has evolved into a vital sports hub, benefitting from substantial public funding. This includes the launch of a Rs 9.67 crore hockey stadium and the ongoing construction of both indoor volleyball and international-standard kabaddi stadiums near the Nehru Indoor Stadium.

The forthcoming Paralympic Sports Complex adds an essential inclusive feature to this expanding sports landscape, positioning Coimbatore as a city that promotes both excellence and equity in athletics.
