Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Coimbatore, Jan 28 (NationPress) The upcoming launch of Periyar Arivulagam next month will establish it as one of the largest public library complexes in Tamil Nadu, integrating traditional library functionalities with hands-on science education.
Constructed at a total investment of Rs 301 crore, this eight-storey building will accommodate over 1.2 lakh books and function as both a public library and a center for science learning.
According to officials, the project, managed by the Public Works Department, covers an area of seven acres and is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent of the civil work already done.
G. Ramesh, librarian at the District Central Library, R.S. Puram, referred to it as one of the most sophisticated libraries being built in the state, which will greatly improve public access to knowledge.
“The facility, equipped with air-conditioned reading areas and specialized learning zones, is on par with the finest libraries in Tamil Nadu. It is anticipated to draw in students, researchers, and the general public in significant numbers,” he stated.
The government has allocated Rs 245 crore for construction, Rs 50 crore for book procurement, and Rs 5 crore for IT and digital infrastructure, including computers and networking tools. The total built-up area of the library is 1.98 lakh sq ft, and it has received all necessary approvals, including clearance from airport authorities.
Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar noted that special attention has been given to inclusive design. “One floor is dedicated to individuals with disabilities, featuring wheelchair access and Braille books, ensuring that the library is open to all segments of society,” he remarked.
Recently, Public Works Minister E.V. Velu visited the construction site to assess the progress with engineers and contractors. The Minister highlighted that the Dravidian model government, led by M.K. Stalin, is committed to building knowledge infrastructure for an informed and educated community.
He referred to the successful Kalaignar Centenary Library as an example, emphasizing its status as a significant learning hub for individuals across the southern districts.
“Following that model, Periyar Arivulagam is being established in Coimbatore, a city celebrated for its robust academic and intellectual environment,” he stated.
The center is named after social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, who originated from the erstwhile Coimbatore district, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to fostering rational thought and social awareness. The Chief Minister is anticipated to inaugurate the facility between February 10 and 28, pending the completion of outstanding work and final approvals.
