New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed made controversial remarks about cricketer Rohit Sharma during the India-New Zealand Champions Trophy match, igniting significant backlash on social media this Sunday. Her remarks, deemed inappropriate by both political and sports circles, have continued to draw criticism.

While the match was in progress, Mohamed took to X to call Rohit Sharma a 'fat sportsman'. She stated, 'Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight! And certainly the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.'

Her comment, perceived as fat-shaming towards the celebrated cricketer, resulted in widespread condemnation.

As the situation escalated, the BJP joined the conversation, criticizing the Congress party for their derogatory remarks about Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari condemned the Congress for their comments, also mocking Rahul Gandhi. He stated, 'Shame on Congress! Now they are targeting the Indian Cricket Captain! Do they expect Rahul Gandhi to play cricket after failing in Indian politics?'

'This is an insult to every patriot who supports the Indian cricket team during tough times. I challenge the Congress's criticism.' he added.

Facing mounting pressure, Shama Mohamed deleted her posts regarding the cricket captain.

The Congress party appears to be facing isolation once more on a national issue. SS (UBT), a significant ally of the INDIA coalition, expressed support for Rohit Sharma, wishing him success in the Champions Trophy.

'Though I am not a die-hard cricket fan, even with my limited knowledge, I can assert that Rohit Sharma - whether carrying extra weight or not - has propelled the Indian team to remarkable achievements. It is his dedication that counts. Good luck, Champion!' wrote Priyanka Chaturvedi on X.

Rohit Sharma became the captain of Team India in 2023. Under his leadership, the team clinched the T20 World Cup last year and secured two Asia Cup titles. In the IPL, he has an impressive record, having lifted the trophy five times with his team, the Mumbai Indians.
