Bhopal, March 3 (NationPress) Madhya Pradesh Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Vishwas Sarang reacted sharply to Congress leader Shama Mohamed's remarks regarding Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma.
Sama Mohamed, a prominent spokesperson for Congress, made a controversial social media post where she labeled Rohit Sharma as "fat" and described him as an "uninspiring" captain of the Indian cricket team.
In her post, she stated, "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! He needs to shed some weight! Moreover, he is certainly the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!"
She went on to challenge Sharma’s credentials by asking, "What is so world-class about him compared to his predecessors? He is merely a mediocre captain and player who got fortunate to lead India."
Her comments ignited fierce backlash from the BJP, leading to an intense political confrontation in Madhya Pradesh.
Senior BJP figure Vishwas Sarang, who oversees the Sports and Youth Welfare Department in the Madhya Pradesh government, strongly condemned Sama Mohamed and the Congress party.
He stated that such “irresponsible” remarks should be condemned.
"The Congress and opposition leaders have consistently attempted to demoralize the factions that uphold the nation’s pride and respect. Whether it’s disparaging the army or undermining soldiers, this behavior has become a norm for Congress and its leaders," Sarang remarked during an interview with IANS in Bhopal.
He further emphasized that individuals who lack cricketing knowledge are critiquing those who strive to bring glory to India.
"Sama Mohamed's comments exemplify the decline of Congress. What sort of politics are they engaging in? It’s truly disgraceful," the BJP minister concluded.
This controversy erupted following Sharma's dismissal for 15 runs off 17 balls during India’s ICC Champions Trophy match against New Zealand on Sunday. However, India successfully set a target of 249 runs and defended it effectively with precise bowling.
India is set to face Australia in the first semi-final in Dubai on Tuesday after triumphing over New Zealand by 44 runs in the last group-stage match at the same venue on Sunday.
