New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s inappropriate comment regarding Rohit Sharma, stating that such remarks about the Indian captain are truly unacceptable.
During the India-New Zealand Champions Trophy Group A match on Sunday, the Congress spokesperson took to X and referred to Rohit as a 'fat sportsman' and described him as an 'unimpressive captain'.
“Rohit Sharma is overweight for a sportsman! He needs to shed some pounds! And he is certainly the most unimpressive captain India has ever had,” Shama posted on X.
In response, the BCCI secretary remarked that it is astonishing to hear such comments from a politician while Team India is competing in an ICC tournament.
"This is regrettable; remarks like this about our captain are entirely unacceptable. The Indian team is currently engaged in an ICC tournament, preparing for the semi-finals, and to have a politician make these statements is quite shocking. We will address this issue," Saikia told IANS.
Shama's remarks about Rohit sparked significant backlash from various sectors, escalating into a major controversy, prompting the Congress party to instruct Shama to remove her social media comment regarding Rohit.
As for the match, India secured victory over New Zealand by 44 runs, aided by Varun Chakaravarthy's five-wicket haul, and confirmed their position at the top of Group A in the eight-team tournament.
Rohit Sharma and his team will face Australia in the first semi-final in Dubai on Tuesday, while New Zealand will take on South Africa in the other semi-final in Lahore on Wednesday.
India remains undefeated in the tournament with three wins out of three matches, gearing up for a rematch against the ODI World Cup champions Australia, whom they faced in the 2023 title clash in Ahmedabad.
