New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) For the Indian National Congress (INC), January 15 marks a pivotal moment in its history as the venerable party relocates its long-standing office from 24, Akbar Road to 9A, Kotla Road.

However, the decision to name the Congress headquarters after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ignited significant controversy, with the BJP criticizing the party for prioritizing the Gandhi family over other esteemed leaders.

The BJP highlighted Congress’ 'double standards' and 'theatrics' in their quest for respect towards former PM Manmohan Singh, particularly after the party called for a memorial in his honor. Following Dr. Singh's passing, Congress had advocated for his remains to be interred at a specific site in the capital, intended to serve as his future memorial. However, lacking assurances from the Centre, the party accused it of neglecting his contributions.

In the meantime, Congress leader KC Venugopal took to X to elaborate on the importance of January 15, asserting that Indira Bhavan signifies more than just a new structure; it is “an institution that will propel the rich legacy of the Indian National Congress into the contemporary era.”

“From our struggle for independence to the ongoing fight against authoritarianism, our history will be honored and remembered in this Bhavan at 9A, Kotla Road, New Delhi,” stated KC Venugopal, Congress General Secretary (Organisation).

The inauguration of the new Congress headquarters took place this morning, officiated by Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, alongside party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and various senior leaders.

“This Bhavan will act as a modern center for our party’s essential operations,” Venugopal added.

24, Akbar Road, the previous Congress headquarters, served as the party’s home for nearly fifty years, chronicling its political highs and lows.

Following the inauguration of the 9A, Kotla Road Congress headquarters, the BJP accused the historic party of overlooking and disregarding the legacy of former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, questioning why the building was named after Indira Gandhi instead of the famed economist.

Congress leaders dismissed the BJP’s claims, stating that the Indira Bhavan was widely accepted.

Indira Bhawan is acknowledged by all. No objections have come from Manmohan Singh's family,” Congress MP Rajeev Shukla informed reporters.
