Congress Leader Kharge Reaches Out to PM Modi for Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Memorial Site

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday addressed a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, imploring that the last rites for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh be conducted at a site where a memorial can be erected.

Kharge's correspondence came after a phone call with PM Modi, during which he explored the possibility of establishing a memorial for Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister for two terms and is deeply respected by the people of India.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 due to health complications related to aging, led the nation as Prime Minister during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) from 2004 to 2014. He had faced declining health in recent months.

“Following our phone conversation this morning, I formally requested that Dr. Manmohan Singh's last rites, scheduled for tomorrow, December 28, 2024, take place at a significant site that would serve as a lasting memorial for this esteemed son of India,” Kharge stated in a letter shared by the Congress on X.

“This aligns with the tradition of establishing memorials for statesmen and former prime ministers at their funeral locations,” the Congress president further noted.

Kharge emphasized that Dr. Manmohan Singh occupies a revered position in the hearts of the Indian populace, with his contributions and achievements being truly remarkable.

He added: “Dr. Singh's profound understanding of economic and fiscal matters stemmed from his extensive background as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India, chief economic advisor to the government of India, and various other roles in several organizations. The respect he commanded from global leaders underscores this reality.”

Kharge remarked: “Dr. Singh’s wise guidance, leadership, and efforts during the global financial crisis remain widely recognized. He recalled President Obama’s remark, stating that 'whenever the Indian prime minister speaks, the entire world pays attention to him.'”

“During a severe economic downturn, it was Dr. Manmohan Singh, as Finance Minister, who steered India out of the crisis and towards economic growth and stability. Hailing from a modest background and having experienced the hardships of the Partition, his determination and resilience propelled him to become one of the world’s leading statesmen.”

“In light of the above, I sincerely hope that the request for Dr. Manmohan Singh’s funeral to occur at a location suitable for a memorial will be honored, befitting his esteemed legacy,” Kharge concluded in his letter to PM Modi.
