Kharge Laments the Loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh: A Legacy Remembered

New Delhi, Dec 27 (NationPress) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has conveyed his sorrow regarding the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, highlighting the ex-PM as a man of action rather than mere words, and asserting that his considerable contributions to the growth of the nation will be permanently recorded in the chronicles of Indian history.
In a message shared on X, the Congress leader stated: "Without a doubt, history shall judge you kindly, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji! With the loss of the Former Prime Minister, India grieves the departure of a visionary leader, a figure of impeccable integrity, and an economist of unmatched repute. His approach to Economic Liberalisation and the Rights-based welfare framework has significantly transformed the lives of millions of Indians, effectively establishing a Middle Class in India and elevating countless individuals from poverty.
"I mourn the passing of a dedicated senior colleague, a thoughtful intellect, and a modest individual who reflected the ambitions of India, having ascended through the ranks with steadfast commitment. I take pride in having served in his Cabinet as Labour Minister, Railway Minister, and Social Welfare Minister.
Kharge further expressed: "As a man of action rather than mere words, his vast contributions to nation-building will be forever engraved in the pages of Indian history. During this time of grief, I extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and numerous admirers. May they find the strength to navigate through this profound loss.
His lasting legacy of fostering India's growth, welfare, and inclusive policies will always be treasured. May his soul find eternal peace.
The confirmation of Dr. Singh's passing was made by AIIMS New Delhi.
"With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, age 92. He was receiving treatment for age-related medical issues and suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. Immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated at home. He was transported to the medical emergency at AIIMS. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 p.m.," stated the hospital in a Thursday announcement. Dr. Manmohan Singh was 92.
Dr. Singh, who held the position of Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was recognized for his transformative influence in guiding India's economy during a critical phase of liberalization.
He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements are anticipated to be revealed soon, with national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expected to pay their respects. The passing of Dr. Singh signifies the conclusion of a significant era in Indian politics. His leadership and legacy will continue to motivate future generations.
Earlier this year in April, Manmohan Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha, with Kharge commending his extensive parliamentary journey.
Dr. Manmohan Singh rose to prominence as the nation's Finance Minister during the government of P.V. Narasimha Rao between 1991-96, having instituted sweeping reforms that revolutionized the economy.
As the two-term Prime Minister of the UPA, he served from 2004 to 2014 and remained a Rajya Sabha member until early this year.
Throughout his political career, Dr. Singh was a Rajya Sabha member since 1991, where he held the position of Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.
Dr. Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 22 following the 2004 general elections and took the oath for a second term on May 22, 2009.
He represented Assam in the Upper House for five terms and transitioned to Rajasthan in 2019.
His final speech in Parliament was against demonetization, labeling it as an "organized loot and legalized plunder".
