Is Congress Closing the ‘Greater Assam’ Controversy? Gaurav Gogoi Calls for Restraint
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 12 (NationPress) The president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gaurav Gogoi, made efforts on Monday to quell the political uproar ignited by comments from Rezaul Karim Sarkar, a newly appointed Congress member. He emphasized the importance of exercising restraint and responsibility when addressing delicate matters in public discourse.
During a press conference following a significant membership event in Morigaon, Gogoi clarified that Sarkar's remarks regarding the concept of “Bor Asom” (Greater Assam) were largely misconstrued, primarily due to the wording and the subsequent interpretation.
Recognizing the confusion generated by these comments, the APCC leader urged that the situation be viewed within its proper context. He stated, “Certain words, when spoken in public, can be interpreted in various manners. Therefore, leaders must exercise caution, especially on sensitive topics.” He advised Sarkar to be more vigilant in future discussions.
Moreover, he affirmed that the Congress party does not support any notion that could be perceived as divisive and remains dedicated to unity, harmony, and development.
The controversy emerged after Sarkar's speech at a gathering marking his formal induction into the Congress, where some audience members and political adversaries claimed his reference to “Bor Asom” implied more than just developmental goals.
Gogoi insisted that Sarkar's intentions were misrepresented and called for tranquility, suggesting the focus should remain on issues impacting the populace.
Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition, also weighed in on the matter, urging Sarkar to avoid making remarks that could lead to misinterpretations and distract from the Congress's broader political mission and developmental objectives.
In response to the backlash, Sarkar expressed regret over the misinterpretation of his comments. He clarified that his vision for “Bor Asom” is rooted in inclusive development and social cohesion, rather than altering identities or fostering divisions.
“From Sadiya to Dhubri, and across both the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, my aim is to cultivate a stronger Assam through genuine development and harmony,” Sarkar stated.
He stressed that his reference was to equitable growth across regions, stating that development should be evenly distributed among all districts.
“As development has occurred in Sivasagar and Dhubri, similar advancements should be witnessed in Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Tinsukia, and other areas. Only through such balanced development can we aspire to a greater Assam,” he remarked, adding that he never intended to create divisions among regions.
Congress officials indicated that the matter should now be considered resolved, reiterating that the party's emphasis remains on unity, inclusive growth, and addressing the needs of the public instead of engaging in divisive rhetoric.
