Lurinjyoti Gogoi Responds to Congress Workers' Claims of Outsider Status
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 8 (NationPress) Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the president of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), expressed his strong disapproval on Sunday regarding comments made by certain Congress workers who labeled him as an 'imported leader' and an 'outsider'. He emphasized that such statements are not only unfounded but also a sign of disrespect towards the people of Assam.
It is noteworthy that the Congress party's state and central leadership has nearly finalized a seat-sharing agreement with Gogoi's regional party, despite ongoing derogatory remarks from a faction of Congress workers aimed at the AJP leader.
During a press briefing, Gogoi challenged the rationale behind these accusations, asserting that calling someone from Assam an outsider is both irrational and offensive.
“Is it possible for an Assamese individual to be deemed an outsider in their own state?” he questioned, insisting that these remarks transcend personal attacks and disrespect the collective identity and sentiments of the Assamese community.
The controversy erupted after some Congress leaders allegedly referred to Gogoi as an 'imported leader' and an 'outsider'.
The situation intensified when a group of Congress workers reportedly set his effigy ablaze during a protest.
In response to this incident, the AJP chief stated he harbors no regrets about the protest, believing it underscores a profound disrespect for the people of Assam.
“They have not merely burned my effigy; they have scorched the sentiments of the Assamese people,” he remarked, asserting that the public would ultimately respond to such provocations.
In light of the political turbulence, Gogoi also highlighted the necessity for a united opposition ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He stressed that collaboration among anti-BJP factions is crucial to mount a formidable political challenge.
Following Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi's earlier announcement regarding his openness to an alliance with the Congress, the AJP leader expressed hope that a partnership involving his party could materialize.
“An alliance is not just essential but also beneficial. My door is open,” he noted, indicating that discussions among opposition figures are ongoing.
Gogoi also encouraged the populace to trust the leadership of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), suggesting that the central leadership of the party could play a vital role in fostering a united opposition front in Assam.
