Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar, March 30 (NationPress) A political dispute has emerged in the lead-up to the Umreth Assembly by-election in Gujarat, as the Congress party challenges the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding its choice of candidate, pointing to issues of dynastic politics.
On Monday, the BJP announced Harshad Parmar, the son of former BJP MLA Govind Parmar, as their candidate for the forthcoming by-election.
Responding to this announcement, Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar criticized the BJP's position on “parivarvaad”, asserting, “I wish to remind the BJP that many of its senior leaders accuse the Congress of promoting dynastic politics. Who have you nominated for Umreth? Isn’t that an example of parivarvaad?”
He mentioned that the Congress is in the process of finalizing its candidate for the by-election.
“For the Umreth Assembly seat, the Congress party has appointed observers, and we will submit the report to the state Congress president, Amit Chavda, within a day or two,” he stated.
“We will soon announce the name of our candidate.”
Meanwhile, the BJP defended its candidate for the by-election.
Party spokesperson Dr. Anil Patel remarked, “Harshad Parmar, aged 38, is our candidate for the Umreth Assembly seat. He is a dedicated worker and a recognized leader who has participated in the political journey alongside his father.”
He added, “The BJP, along with the legacy of the late Govind Parmar, enjoys substantial public support in the area,” expressing confidence in their chances of winning.
“The BJP is poised to secure victory by a margin exceeding 26,000 votes in the by-election, thanks to Govind Parmar’s contributions and the state government’s emphasis on development,” he stated.
The by-election for the Umreth seat in Anand district has been necessitated by the passing of the sitting MLA, Govind Parmar.
This constituency has been a battleground for electoral contests between the BJP and the Congress in recent years, making the upcoming poll a significant event in the region.
