Thiruvananthapuram, June 25 (NationPress) Just hours after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opted to send a formal letter to Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar regarding the display of the Bharat Mata image at official events in the Governor’s residence, furious SFI activists attempted to block Arlekar from entering the Kerala University Senate hall.

The Governor was scheduled to participate in a book release event honoring the struggles endured during the Emergency period.

Tensions escalated when the Bharat Mata image was unveiled on stage, prompting hundreds of SFI activists to converge outside the University gate, alongside student activists from the BJP.

In an unexpected turn, the Registrar of Kerala University insisted that the event could not proceed with the Bharat Mata image present, although Arlekar arrived an hour later than planned.

By that time, law enforcement had dispersed the demonstrators, allowing Arlekar's convoy to reach the venue.

During his address, Arlekar urged attendees to reflect on events from 50 years ago. “During the Emergency, no one could have envisioned such occurrences in the life of Bharat Mata. It was a dark chapter in our long-standing democracy, marked by the suppression of all freedom,” remarked the Governor.

“The Emergency was a time of extreme oppression that many prefer to forget. I was imprisoned alongside my father during that era. That was the Emergency, characterized by the ruthless pursuit of power by Indira Gandhi,” he continued.

Addressing the delay in his arrival, he lamented the prevailing intolerance that caused this setback.

“What transpired today resembles an Emergency situation. Why this intolerance? I am not inclined toward confrontation, but that doesn’t imply I will yield,” stated Arlekar.

Former State BJP president and ex-Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan remarked that the current situation illustrates an ongoing ‘Emergency’ as the Registrar and the Kerala Police attempted to prevent this program from occurring.

“This event proceeded after fulfilling all necessary protocols and paying a rental fee of ₹65,000. Just before it began, we received the directive to remove the image. The Bharat Mata image is a national emblem. It was utilized by everyone during the Emergency period. What is wrong with commemorating that time with the same image on stage? The University Registrar has made a mistake, as the Governor also serves as the Chancellor, marking a blemish on democracy,” Rajasekheran added.

Point of View

This incident highlights the ongoing conflicts surrounding symbols of national identity and historical memory. While the Bharat Mata image is revered by many, its contentious use in political discourse raises questions about freedom of expression and the limits of tolerance in a vibrant democracy. It's essential to ensure that our collective memory does not become a battleground for political agendas.
