Court in Assam Denies Bail Request for Actress Sumi Borah

Guwahati, Dec 2 (NationPress) In a significant ruling, a court in Assam's Dibrugarh district dismissed the bail requests submitted by the controversial Assamese actress Sumi Borah, her husband Tarkik Borah, and Bishal Phukan in connection with a multi-crore online stock trading scam.
The primary suspect in this online fraud, Bishal Phukan, alongside Tarkik Borah, had previously secured bail from the Gauhati High Court last week after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a charge sheet within the statutory 60 days following their arrest.
Despite obtaining bail, the duo remained incarcerated due to multiple pending cases against them.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had stated earlier that no individuals involved in the online trading scam would be released from custody as several charges were still pending.
Chief Minister Sarma elaborated, "There was a procedural issue. The CBI typically submits charge sheets within 90 days after arresting suspects, but the Gauhati High Court ruled that the charge sheet must be presented within 60 days. This was the basis for granting bail to some suspects; however, they will not be released as the central investigative agency plans to appeal the bail decision in the apex court."
He added, "Furthermore, numerous cases have been filed against the accused in the online trading scam, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is also investigating them alongside the CBI."
Bishal Phukan allegedly leveraged Sumi Borah's connections within the Assamese film industry to attract a select group of clients.
He reportedly hosted extravagant parties for artists and enticed them with luxurious gifts to encourage investments in the online trading venture.
In September, a massive online trading fraud amounting to Rs 2,200 crore was uncovered in Assam, following the arrest of the mastermind, Bishal Phukan, at his residence in Dibrugarh.
Sumi Borah and her spouse Tarkik Borah, who are implicated in the trading scandal, later surrendered to law enforcement.
