New Delhi, Sep 12 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to CP Radhakrishnan as he took the oath of office as the 15th Vice President of India. Modi lauded Radhakrishnan's unwavering dedication to public service and his steadfast commitment to democratic values.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated: “I attended the oath-taking ceremony of Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji. As a devoted public servant, he has committed his life to nation-building, social service, and the enhancement of democratic principles. I wish him a prosperous and impactful Vice Presidential tenure, focused on serving the populace.”
The oath-taking ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday morning, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath.
Key political figures from various parties attended the event, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior ministers and parliamentarians.
Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was also in attendance to observe the leadership transition.
Radhakrishnan’s ascent to this prominent role comes after his significant victory in the Vice-Presidential election, where he garnered 452 first-preference votes, defeating opposition-backed candidate B. Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. His election is perceived as a unifying choice thanks to his diplomatic political demeanor and non-confrontational approach.
Before becoming Vice President, Radhakrishnan held the position of Governor of Maharashtra, from which he resigned following his election. His longstanding ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP, paired with his reputable image and talent for consensus-building, were pivotal in earning widespread support.
Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan's political journey began as a student leader. He was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Coimbatore. Radhakrishnan has also served as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, and Maharashtra, in addition to being the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
Upon taking the oath as the Vice President of India, Radhakrishnan also assumed the role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, which is India’s Upper House of Parliament.
