Is the Media Misrepresenting CPI-M's Anti-Communal Stance?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 10 (NationPress) CPI-M Kerala secretary M.V. Govindan has accused the media of distorting the party's position against communalism following the controversy ignited by senior leader A.K. Balan’s comments regarding the Marad riots.
Govindan stated that criticisms aimed at communal elements are being intentionally misrepresented as criticisms against specific religions.
He claimed that criticisms of the RSS were being mischaracterized as assaults on Hinduism, while critiques of Jamaat-e-Islami were framed as attacks on Muslims.
He warned that communal forces represent a significant threat to democracy and need to be challenged without any misrepresentation or fear.
The controversy arose after remarks made by former minister and veteran CPI(M) leader A.K. Balan, who stated on Saturday that he would not apologize to Jamaat-e-Islami for his comments regarding the Marad riots.
Balan dismissed the legal notice he received from Jamaat-e-Islami demanding Rs 1 crore in damages as unfounded, asserting he was ready to face imprisonment.
He clarified that his statements aimed to emphasize that communal harmony can only be maintained when governments resist the influence of sectarian groups.
State Local Self Government Minister M.B. Rajesh expressed strong support for Balan, pointing out that communal riots in Kerala had occurred under UDF governance, while Left administrations have successfully kept communal forces at bay.
The matter also prompted a sharp reaction from AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal, who criticized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami had collaborated with the CPI(M) during the Marad riots.
He further asserted that the Chief Minister's remarks echoed sentiments that even the Sangh Parivar would hesitate to express publicly.
As political leaders from various parties engage in harsh exchanges, the controversy has escalated tensions ahead of the forthcoming electoral contests in the State.
Govindan also addressed inquiries regarding the Sabarimala gold theft case, stating that the detention of the tantri was strictly an operation executed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
“Is there a rule preventing the arrest of the tantri?” he questioned, emphasizing that decisions about arrests lie solely with the SIT and should not involve political influence.
