Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 23 (NationPress) Following a challenging relationship with former Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, the ruling CPI-M in Kerala seems to be warming up to the newly appointed Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
In an article featured in the CPI-M’s official publication, State Secretary M.V. Govindan commended Governor Arlekar for his actions. Govindan specifically highlighted Arlekar’s choice to deliver the full Governor’s address, which contained critiques of the Centre, during the Kerala Legislative Assembly session on January 17.
“We all remember the incident in the Assembly in 2024 when the former Governor Arif Mohammad Khan abruptly concluded his speech in less than two minutes. In contrast, the new Governor, despite the critical remarks about the Centre, fulfilled his constitutional responsibility by delivering the entire speech. This is a promising development, and we hope it continues in the future,” Govindan stated.
Reports indicate that, unlike Khan, who was perceived as a politician, Arlekar is viewed as a dedicated RSS member with robust support from BJP leadership and the RSS hierarchy. Known for his straightforward approach, Arlekar has already shown his decisiveness. On his inaugural day in office, he reinstated key officials from the Kerala Police at Raj Bhavan who had been dismissed, following discussions with the Acting State Police Chief.
In contrast, Khan's term was characterized by ongoing conflicts with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his cabinet, often spilling over into public view. These disputes culminated in a lackluster farewell for Khan, with neither Vijayan nor his ministers present.
In a notable shift, Vijayan recently interrupted a press conference to rush to the airport and personally greet Arlekar -- a sign that suggests a possible reconciliation in the dynamics between the state government and Raj Bhavan.
Arlekar was sworn in as the Governor of Kerala on January 2, succeeding Arif Mohammad Khan, who has since been appointed as the new Governor of Bihar.
