Mumbai, Jan 28 (NationPress) Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), is preparing for a significant transformation with the redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1). This initiative will enable the terminal to handle 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), reflecting a 42 percent increase from its existing capacity, as announced on Tuesday.

Set for completion in 2028-29, the redesigned terminal will boast a built-up area exceeding two million square feet and is expected to epitomize digitisation and consumer convenience.

Phase 1 of T1's modernisation is slated to commence in November this year, according to a statement from CSMIA, which is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL).

The redevelopment will be executed in phases to minimize disruption to airport operations. The first phase involves demolishing the current structure starting in November 2025, followed by the construction of the new terminal.

CSMIA T2, along with the forthcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport expected to open in 2025, will address the capacity gap resulting from T1's demolition.

These airports will collectively manage passenger traffic and flight schedules to accommodate the increasing demands of both Mumbai City and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

“The team at CSMIA is diligently collaborating with our stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition, minimizing disruption to daily operations or passenger experience,” stated Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL).

“This redevelopment focuses not only on expanding capacity — it’s about ensuring our city’s prominence on the global stage. Our main goal remains to deliver the exceptional service that our passengers expect,” he added.

Upon its completion in 2028-29, the new T1 at CSMIA will stand as a symbol of sustainable innovation, establishing a global standard for eco-friendly airport design. T1 aims to be India's first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport.

The complete renovation of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) will support domestic operations while facilitating the future integration of international services. With a capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), this terminal will address the increasing demands of India's growing aviation market.

The redevelopment is set to introduce state-of-the-art infrastructure enhancements, including district cooling, advanced electrical substations, and an overhauled baggage handling system. These upgrades will elevate all aspects of airport operations, both airside and landside.

The Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) will serve as the core of Mumbai’s air, rail, and road networks. Passengers will benefit from seamless connectivity, featuring direct metro access and underground bus stations, creating a future-ready gateway that will redefine travel in India.

The recent Level 5 accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI) for CSMIA further solidifies the airport’s position as a global leader in airport operations and passenger service.
