The newly inaugurated airport, known as Navi Mumbai International Airport, opened its doors to travelers on December 25.
With its establishment, Mumbai joins the ranks of global metropolises like London and New York, which operate multiple airports to accommodate increasing air traffic.
This airport is anticipated to alleviate congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and cater to the long-term travel requirements of the region.
Developed and managed by Adani Airports Holdings Limited, a branch of Adani Enterprises Limited, this project stands as one of India’s most significant greenfield airport ventures, completed in record time.
The first commercial flight, IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 8 am, celebrated with a traditional water cannon salute.
During its inaugural day, the airport managed 48 flights connecting nine domestic cities, serving over 4,000 passengers.
Peak traffic occurred in the early morning hours, demonstrating robust demand from the outset.
Jeet Adani, Director at Adani Airports Holdings Limited, mentioned that the new airport is crucial for establishing a resilient multi-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, enhancing passenger experience and facilitating future aviation expansion.
“NMIA creates a strong multi-airport framework for the MMR, increasing capacity, enriching passenger experience, and ensuring sustainable aviation development,” Jeet Adani emphasized.
The airport also showcased a spectacular drone performance featuring over 1,500 synchronized drones on the eve of its launch.
